FSL were requested to carry out a review of the Stage 4 proposal for the smoke ventilation system serving the basement. As part of the review, it was identified that no mechanical smoke make-up system had been designed for the basement area. Instead, natural smoke vents were proposed.
While natural ventilation may be acceptable where vents discharge directly to atmosphere, it was noted that this condition was not met in a number of areas of the basement. As a result, the proposed arrangement does not comply with the requirements of BS 9999. This non-compliance was subsequently brought to the attention of the design team for further action and resolution.
